Abstract
The construction of the Regions, starting from their first settlement in 1970 until the crisis of the Venetian political system in 1992, was the last great legacy of the Christian Democratic ruling class, especially in regions such as Veneto where the D.C. had, since the end of the Second World War, been hegemonic. The essay analyzes the internal and external reasons for the intrinsic weakness of the party, despite having an appearance of granite solidity owing to its election results. Therefore, we have tried to explain how it was impossible for the D.C. in Veneto to have a strong ideology that was independent of the Church and how the consequent choice of a weak territorial ideology resulted in inevitable ambiguities. The story of the last president of the “first Region”, Franco Cremonese, allows us to illuminate the positive aspects and intrinsic limits of these years in the political history of Veneto.
