Abstract
This contribution offers a concise overview of the research on Andrea Luchesi, the Kapellmeister of the Electoral Court of Bonn at the time of the young Ludwig van Beethoven. Building on the works of Theodor Anton Henseler (1937), Claudia Valder-Knechtges (1983, 1984, 1989), and Giorgio Taboga (1994), the primary and secondary sources, records of the period, and extant compositions have been integrated and complemented by musical and codicological analysis (papers and manuscripts); the results of this work, summarized in the accompanying thematic catalogue, allow for us to refine certain hypotheses put forward regarding the chronology of Luchesi’s surviving works, and establish a number of firm conclusions that will hopefully stimulate further research in the years to come. Among the most striking findings in this article is the near-total disappearance of Luchesi’s sacred and secular works attributable to the thirty years of his Bonn period — a lacuna that has had enormously significant repercussions on the history of Venetian music and on that of the chapel of the Electoral Principality of Cologne-Bonn and its members.
